Story Elements in Music

Standards:
The School Music Program Content Standard 7: Evaluating music and music performances

Objectives
Students will learn that:
1.      Music can be composed in a certain way in order to depict certain story elements.
2.      Music can have components that are unique to its beginning, middle, and end.
3.      Students will review Setting, Foreshadowing, Plot, Conflict, Falling Action, and Resolution

Importance of lesson:
This lesson is important because it not only helps students understand the music they listen to, but it helps them understand better the elements to a story and how this relates to music.  This will help them when they write their own stories or when they are reading a story, or watching a movie.

Materials:
Hoosiers sound track

Lesson:
Introduction: “Do you remember learning about story elements?  Who can tell me the main elements of a story?”  Write the elements on the board in order. “Today we’re going to listen to music that was used in a movie.  We are going to listen to music that depicts the beginning, middle, and end of the movie.”

“While listening to the music, I want you to think about what characteristics the music has.  Why would it fit into the beginning, middle, or end?  I want you to write, or outline your own story while listening to the music. It must be sports related.  I want you to have a beginning, middle, and end to the story.  That includes setting, plot with conflict, and resolution.”

Body:
Play first piece of music (Track 2- beginning to 1:55)
Discuss what they heard.  Did they notice anything about the music that would be consistent with an introduction to a story?  Main theme was played.

Play second piece of music (Track 4-beginning to 1:26)
How did this music depict conflict?  Students should mention beat, loudness, etc.

Play third piece of music (Track 7- 6:52 to 10:00)
Discuss what elements of music depicted falling action and climax.  Notice that the theme was played again indicating normalcy.  During the conflict the music was different than main theme or was a variation of the main theme.

Closure:
Mention that music was from Hoosiers.  First song was when the main character, the coach, came to a new town to be the new coach.  People were skeptical of him.  Second song was during the regional final game- conflict with other team.  Last song was during the state finals game where the small team from Hickory won the state championship.

Have some students share their stories.

Assessment:  I will assess students by the way they discuss story elements and what they say about each piece of music.  I will have students turn in their stories and make sure each story includes the story elements we discussed.

Connections:  Obviously this lesson relates to Reading and Writing.  Students relate music to the way a story works.  They will find out that the two can be related.
